VGP inspections of lifting equipment: understand them to better prepare your inspections

The VGP (Vérification Générale Périodique), the periodic inspection required by French law, checks the condition of lifting equipment and detects any deterioration that could pose a hazard.

What is a VGP inspection?

It covers a wide range of lifting and handling equipment: overhead cranes, forklifts, telehandlers, stackers, aerial work platforms, jib cranes, freight elevators, lift tables…

When must lifting equipment be inspected?

The French decree (arrêté) of 1 March 2004 distinguishes several situations, in particular:

  • Commissioning, which may require load tests for new or used equipment.
  • Periodic inspections (VGP), carried out at intervals defined according to the equipment and its operating conditions.
  • Return to service, in particular after certain operations such as dismantling and reassembly, a modification or a repair affecting essential components.

What role do control weights play?

When an inspection requires a load test, you need to be able to build a known load suited to the equipment and to the test to be carried out.

OSC control weights are designed to make this easier by combining modularity, precision, safe stacking and ease of handling.
